Underleaf ("Underleaf", "we", "us" or "our") provides AI tools that turn documents, images, handwriting and text into LaTeX and help with academic writing. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it and the choices you have when you use our website, web application, browser extension, add-ons and any other products or services that link to this policy (together, the "Services").

Information We Collect

We collect information in the following ways:

Account information. When you create an account we collect your email address and, if you sign in through a third-party identity provider such as Google, the basic profile information that provider shares with us, such as your name, email address and profile picture.
Content you submit. The Services work on content you choose to provide, such as documents, PDFs, images, screenshots, handwritten notes, text and prompts, and the output we generate from that content.
Payment information. If you purchase a paid plan, our payment processor collects your payment details. We receive limited information such as your plan, billing status and the last digits of your payment method, but we do not store full card numbers.
Usage and device information. We collect information about how you interact with the Services, such as features used, pages visited, approximate location derived from your IP address, browser and device type, and error reports. Some of this is collected through cookies and similar technologies.
Communications. If you contact us, we keep the messages and any information you include in them.

How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

provide, operate and maintain the Services, including processing the content you submit to generate the output you request;
create and secure your account, authenticate you and manage your subscription and billing;
understand how the Services are used so we can improve them, fix problems and develop new features;
communicate with you about your account, updates, security notices and, where permitted, product news you can opt out of at any time;
detect, prevent and address fraud, abuse and security issues; and
comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.

We do not sell your personal information.

Information From Google

If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive the basic profile information described above (name, email address and profile picture). We use this information only to create and secure your Underleaf account, identify you within the Services and communicate with you about them. We do not use it for advertising and we do not share it with third parties except with service providers acting on our behalf as described in this policy.

Underleaf's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. You can revoke Underleaf's access to your Google account at any time from your Google account settings.

How We Share Information

We share information only in the following circumstances:

Service providers. We rely on third-party providers to run the Services, including cloud hosting and storage, authentication, payment processing, email delivery, analytics and AI model providers that process the content you submit in order to generate your output. These providers may access information only to perform services for us.
Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, regulation or legal process, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Underleaf, our users or others.
Business transfers. If Underleaf is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
With your consent or at your direction, for example when you choose to share output publicly.

Data Retention

We keep account information for as long as your account is active. Content you submit and the output we generate are kept for a limited period so you can access your history, after which they may be deleted from our active systems. Usage and billing records may be retained longer where required for accounting, security or legal purposes. You can delete your account at any time from your account settings, which removes your account information from our active systems.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls and reputable infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Choices and Rights

You can access and update your account information from your account settings, delete your account, and opt out of marketing emails using the link in any such email. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to request access to, correction of or deletion of your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. Cookies and Analytics

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences and understand how the Services are used, including through third-party analytics and advertising measurement tools. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though some features may not work without them.

International Transfers

Underleaf operates from the United States and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. By using the Services you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in countries that may have different data protection laws than your own.

Children

The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page and, for significant changes, we may provide additional notice through the Services or by email.
