What is AMA 11th edition?
AMA (American Medical Association) style is the citation format used by JAMA Network journals, the American Heart Association, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and many other US medical publications. It is a close cousin of Vancouver style but italicizes journal titles and has its own conventions for handling supplementary material, unpublished work, and electronic sources.
Who uses AMA?
Required by JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, and the full JAMA Network. Also used by Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the American Heart Association journals, and many US-based clinical residency programs for thesis and research paper submissions.
For instructors & researchers
Clinical research and medical-school faculty: AMA differs from Vancouver in subtle ways, italicized journal titles, different DOI prefix, distinct rules for online supplements. This generator produces AMA 11th-edition format correctly so residents and fellows can focus on the science, not the citation rules. Use it to format references for case reports, IRB submissions, and dissertation chapters.

AMA citation questions
Is AMA the same as Vancouver?
Close but distinct. AMA italicizes journal titles and uses a slightly different layout for online sources. Most AMA-style journals will not accept Vancouver-formatted manuscripts without revisions.
How does AMA 11 differ from AMA 10?
AMA 11 (released 2020) expanded coverage of social-media citations, preprints, and inclusive language, and updated rules for DOIs and digital identifiers. Most existing citations are still valid.
Should I include a publication date for AMA web citations?
Yes. Include both the publication or update date and the access date when citing a website in AMA.
Which LaTeX style file produces AMA output?
Use the ama-bibstyle or jama BibTeX style files, paired with the BibTeX export from this generator.
