Reading and speaking speed reference
• Adult silent reading: 200–250 wpm
• Skim reading: 400–500 wpm
• Conference talk (relaxed): 110–130 wpm
• Lecture (engaging pace): 130–150 wpm
• Audiobook narration: 150–160 wpm
• Podcast hosts: 150–180 wpm
Practice your talk before the timer runs out
Most conference time-slots are 12, 15, 20, or 30 minutes, and going over is the fastest way to irritate a session chair. Drop your talk notes or slide content here, set the speaking speed to roughly 120 wpm (the safe default for an academic audience), and tighten sections that push you over the slot.
For lectures, the "slides at 2 minutes each" estimate is a useful sanity check: a 50-minute class with 25 dense slides is usually a recipe for rushing the last quarter.
