About the Elsevier Template

The Elsevier elsarticle template is the official and preferred LaTeX format for submitting articles to any Elsevier journal. Elsevier is the world's largest academic publisher, and the elsarticle class handles the diverse formatting requirements across thousands of journals.

The template provides multiple variants depending on your citation style: elsarticle-template-num.tex for numerical citations, elsarticle-template-harv.tex for name-year (Harvard) citations, and elsarticle-template-num-names.tex for numerical citations with the new natbib option. The package includes several bibliography style files (.bst) for consistent referencing.

Elsevier also provides the newer cas-sc.cls and cas-dc.cls classes for journals that go through the Complex Article Service (CAS) workflow. These are accepted alongside elsarticle for submission. The elsarticle class is available through TeX Live, MikTeX, and CTAN, and is pre-loaded on Overleaf.
